About Us

Underage substance use is a serious public health and safety issue facing parents, local government and other citizens in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Child and adolescent drinkers are a threat to themselves and their neighbors.

Research indicates that drinking and drug use is associated with risk-taking behavior among adolescents. Alcohol diminishes inhibitions and increases the likelihood of participation in unsafe activities. (high-risk sex, rape, traumatic injury, vandalism, violence, falls, drowning and drunk driving).

The adolescent brain continues to develop into a person’s early 20’s. Exposing the adolescent brain to alcohol and other drugs may have long-lasting effects on intellectual capabilities.

The Coalition for Alcohol & Drug Free Teenagers of Chapel Hill & Carrboro is engaged in a community-wide effort to combat underage drinking and illegal drug use. Our mission is to keep children safe from the harmful, often deadly consequences, related to use of these substances. The coalition involves stakeholders throughout the community including, parents, local law enforcement, Chapel Hill & Carrboro City Schools, elected officials, youth advocates, health care professionals, the judiciary, business owners, and youth.
