What can be done to stop the epidemic of underage drinking and other drug abuse?

The AMA advocates numerous ways to combat this growing epidemic, including:
  • Increasing enforcement of underage drinking laws
  • Reducing access to alcohol for children and youth (the family home is a primary place teens acquire alcohol)
  • Reducing sales and provision of alcohol to children and youth
  • Providing more education about the harmful effects of alcohol and other drug abuse
  • Talk to children early and often about drug use, setting clear standards and expectations opposing use
  • Reducing the demand for alcohol and the normalization of alcohol use by children and youth
